Herat's Shoe Manufacturing Industry Sees Growth Amid Challenges

In the bustling province of Herat, the shoe manufacturing industry is making significant strides. Currently, there are 320 shoe manufacturing factories operating, both small and large, producing an impressive 50,000 pairs of shoes daily. This growth is a testament to the resilience and potential of local businesses in the face of challenges.

Among these factories, ten large industrial plants have recently commenced operations, further boosting the local economy. Abdul Wahab Amini, the head of the Shoe Manufacturers Union in Herat, highlighted the potential for growth, stating, "50,000 pairs are produced daily. If the shoe industry is supported, it could reach up to 200,000 pairs per day." This optimistic outlook reflects the determination of local manufacturers to expand their production capabilities.

However, the local shoe industry faces stiff competition from imported shoes, particularly from neighboring countries. These imports have adversely affected the business of local manufacturers, who struggle to compete with the lower prices of foreign products. Mustafa Darwishi, a factory head, expressed his concerns, saying, "When foreign products enter the country, their prices are very low. The customs duty is low, and sellers sell them cheaply. If the customs duty is increased, their prices will rise, and as a result, we will also be able to earn a living." This statement underscores the need for supportive policies that can help local businesses thrive.

Despite these challenges, there is a silver lining. Statistics indicate that shoe production in Herat has increased by ten percent compared to last year. This growth is crucial, especially considering that over 4,000 people are employed in these factories, many of whom have honed their skills in shoe production. Ghulam Habib, an employee, shared, "We are not dependent on the people of the country; we work here. We produce boots in winter and slippers in summer." This sentiment reflects the pride and dedication of the workforce in Herat.

Unfortunately, the industry has not been without its setbacks. In recent years, nearly seventy shoe manufacturing factories in Herat have ceased operations due to the influx of imported shoes. This decline highlights the vulnerability of local industries in a globalized market. Nevertheless, the workshops in Herat city continue to produce a variety of shoes, including men’s, women’s, children’s, spring, and winter footwear.

The shoe manufacturing industry in Herat is at a crossroads. While it faces challenges from imports, the potential for growth remains strong.
