Local Beekeepers in Jawzjan Struggle Amid Honey Sales Decline

The recent decrease in honey sales in Jawzjan markets has sparked worries among local beekeepers. Economic difficulties faced by the residents are identified as a primary reason behind the drop in honey purchases. Adil Shah, a 35-year-old from Sheberghan, made a significant investment of 600,000 afghani in a beekeeping farm to support his family. Despite a successful honey harvest of 500 kilograms this year, Shah has encountered challenges in selling his produce, managing to sell only 10 kilograms. The market saturation caused by the influx of cheaper foreign honey, priced between 100 to 200 afghani, has significantly impacted local sales.

Local residents in Jawzjan emphasize the superior quality and affordability of locally produced honey in comparison to imports. They advocate for the support of domestic products to stimulate the local economy. This sentiment is echoed by Shahrokh Joyenda and Emal Haidari, who emphasize the economic advantages and quality superiority of local honey.

The Jawzjan Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock has pledged to enhance domestic honey production and provide support to beekeepers in the region. Samiullah Hakimi, the head of livestock services, has outlined plans to offer technical, professional, and financial assistance to individuals establishing beekeeping farms. Currently, there are three operational beekeeping farms in Jawzjan, as confirmed by agriculture officials.

The challenges faced by local beekeepers in Jawzjan due to the decline in honey sales highlight the importance of supporting domestic products. By promoting and investing in locally produced honey, not only can the local economy be boosted, but the superior quality of the product can also be preserved.
