KARACHI: The Sindh government is actively seeking investment from Chinese firms in various sectors, particularly in e-vehicles and waste-to-energy projects. This initiative was highlighted by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah during a recent meeting with a delegation of Chinese investors, led by Wan Xiaowu, the Chairman of the Belt & Road (B&R) Group. The Chief Minister expressed his government’s readiness to facilitate direct investments or public-private partnerships, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for the province's development.

During the meeting, it was revealed that over 12 leading Chinese companies have shown interest in investing in Karachi. Their focus areas include waste-to-energy projects, wastewater treatment, desalination plants, and the manufacturing of electric buses. Additionally, there is a keen interest in developing kits to convert petrol motorcycles to electric energy and reconstructing the city’s sewerage system. The Chief Minister assured that the Sindh government would provide all necessary support to these firms to establish their operations.

In a broader context, CM Murad also addressed the ongoing efforts to enhance security and combat extremism in Sindh. He mentioned that his government has implemented various measures, including intelligence sharing and coordinated operations with law enforcement agencies. These initiatives aim to promote peace and harmony within the province. The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing participants of a national security and war course, which included 240 officers from the armed forces and civil services, as well as military officers from 24 friendly countries.

To further strengthen the police force, the Sindh government has introduced several initiatives, such as training programs and infrastructure development. Notable projects include the upgrading of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and the launch of the Karachi Safe City Project. The Sindh Smart Surveillance System (S4) is also underway, which will see the installation of advanced cameras at 40 toll plazas across the province.

Financially, the Chief Minister outlined the province's budget for the year 2024-25, which totals Rs.3.056 trillion. This budget allocates Rs.1,912 billion for current revenue, Rs.959 billion for development projects, and Rs.184.8 billion for capital expenditure. CM Murad emphasized the importance of effective financial management, noting that essential monthly expenditures, including salaries and pensions, amount to Rs.143 billion.

In light of the devastating floods that affected Sindh in 2022, which left 12 million people homeless and caused damages estimated at $20 billion, the government is prioritizing recovery efforts. At the Climate Resilient Pakistan Conference in Geneva, the Sindh government presented a recovery plan worth $11.6 billion, focusing on rebuilding infrastructure and providing social services.

As Sindh moves forward with its ambitious plans for development and investment, the collaboration with Chinese firms could play a pivotal role in transforming the province's economic landscape. By embracing innovative technologies and sustainable practices, Sindh aims not only to recover from past challenges but also to pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.
