Gainax, the renowned anime studio behind Evangelion, faces bankruptcy due to financial mismanagement. Studio Khara acquires Gainax trademark, marking the end of an era in anime production.

Gainax, the renowned Japanese animation studio known for creating the iconic series Neon Genesis Evangelion, has recently announced its bankruptcy. The studio's financial struggles have led to this decision, with the Tokyo District Court officially accepting their bankruptcy application on May 29, 2024. Despite this closure, the Gainax trademark has been acquired by Studio Khara, another well-known anime production company.

Gainax rose to fame with the creation of Evangelion, a futuristic anime series set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, following the story of young pilots who defend the city using giant robots. Alongside Evangelion, Gainax is also celebrated for producing other popular titles like Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

The bankruptcy filing was a result of mismanagement by former executives who treated Gainax as their personal asset since around 2012. This mismanagement, as stated on Gainax's official website, compounded the financial and operational challenges that the studio had faced over the years. Notable incidents include production issues in 1992 that led to the cancellation of a sequel to their successful film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise.

In 1995, Gainax experienced a resurgence with the release of Evangelion, a critically acclaimed anime that became a classic in the genre. However, legal troubles followed due to dishonest reporting of the anime's success, resulting in convictions for tax evasion. Subsequent years saw Gainax entangled in various legal battles, including a lawsuit from Studio Khara in 2016 over an unpaid loan.

Further controversies arose in 2019 when Gainax's representative director was arrested for misconduct involving a voice actress, leading to a prison sentence in 2020. These incidents, combined with a history of financial mismanagement, ultimately led to Gainax's bankruptcy and the dissolution of the studio.

Gainax's bankruptcy marks the end of an era for the studio that brought us some of the most beloved anime series. While the closure is a sad chapter in Gainax's history, fans can still cherish the legacy of their favorite shows. As Gainax's trademark passes to Studio Khara, we can look forward to seeing how this transition will impact the world of anime production.
