James Gunn debunks fan theories linking him to Henry Cavill's Superman role departure. Gunn clarifies timeline and discusses upcoming 'Superman' movie with David Corenswet.

James Gunn has debunked fan theories linking him to Henry Cavill's departure from the Superman role. During his promotion of 'The Suicide Squad' in 2021, Gunn clarified that he wasn't involved with DC Studios at the time and only considered the position after being approached by Peter Safran in late 2022.

The speculation arose from actor Nathan Fillion's comments to Collider, where he mentioned a conversation with Gunn about playing Guy Gardner in a new Superman project. Gunn corrected the timeline, revealing that the discussion actually took place at a 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' party last year, long after he and Safran took over DC Studios.

Gunn dismissed the conspiracy theory as baseless, questioning the logic behind fabricating such a scenario when his Superman project was always intended as a fresh start, not a continuation of Cavill's storyline.

Henry Cavill's brief return as Superman, teased through a 'Black Adam' cameo and social media posts, was overshadowed by the subsequent announcement of David Corenswet taking on the iconic role in Gunn's upcoming 'Superman' movie, set for release on July 11, 2025.
