A significant theft of copper wire valued at Rs 450 million reported at Tarbela Dam, raising serious security concerns and prompting investigations.
Tarbela Dam, a crucial site for Pakistan's energy generation, has recently been the center of a shocking incident involving the theft of valuable copper wire. The Chief Engineer of the Tarbela Power House has reported that several tons of copper wire, valued at over Rs 450 million, have gone missing from the store. This alarming news was communicated in a formal letter to the Ghazi Station House Officer (SHO), highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
According to the Chief Engineer, the copper wire was securely stored in wooden boxes, yet it has mysteriously disappeared. In his letter, he has urged the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown thieves and has called for immediate action to recover the stolen materials. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ghazi, Raja Bashir Ahmed, has confirmed that investigations are currently underway, expressing hope for swift results.
What makes this incident even more concerning is the fact that the stolen wire was kept in a highly secure area within the Chinese camp, which is known for its stringent security measures. The Chief Engineer's letter revealed that during a routine inspection on October 9, the storekeeper discovered that the wooden boxes containing Stator Winding materials were open. A subsequent check by the store staff uncovered that 176 copper Stator winding bars and 80 serial connectors had been stolen from the main store.
Despite the presence of police and WAPDA security personnel in the area at all times, there were no signs of forced entry, broken locks, or damaged doors. This raises serious questions about the security protocols in place, as the materials vanished from locked rooms within the store. Such a breach in a high-security zone is alarming and calls for a thorough investigation to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
The theft of copper wire not only represents a significant financial loss but also poses a threat to the operational integrity of the Tarbela Power House. As the authorities work diligently to uncover the truth behind this incident, it is essential for all stakeholders to reflect on the importance of robust security measures. Ensuring the safety of valuable resources is crucial for maintaining trust and efficiency in Pakistan's energy sector. The outcome of this investigation will likely have far-reaching implications, not just for the Tarbela Dam but for the entire energy infrastructure of the country.
