Customs officials at Torkham border intercept one billion rupees worth of drugs, highlighting the link between drug smuggling and terrorism.

Customs officials at the Torkham border crossing, located between Pakistan and Afghanistan, have successfully intercepted a significant cache of illicit substances valued at one billion rupees. The operation, which took place on Saturday, was a result of a tip-off regarding drug smuggling from Afghanistan.

During a press conference at the customs house, Chief Collector Customs Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa disclosed that the interception occurred when an empty truck arriving from Afghanistan underwent a thorough inspection by customs officials. The meticulous search uncovered 14 kilograms of ice and 18 kilograms of heroin hidden in secret compartments within the vehicle. The driver of the truck was promptly arrested, and the confiscated drugs were displayed to the media.

The Chief Collector Customs highlighted the significance of the seizure, noting that the street value of the recovered narcotics in the international market is estimated to be approximately Rs1 billion. This recent seizure adds to the continuous efforts of customs personnel in the Torkham border area, where, in the past month alone, drugs worth one billion and 390 million rupees have been seized.

Emphasizing the connection between drug smuggling and terrorism, the Chief Collector pointed out that smugglers often collaborate with terrorist networks. This collaboration has resulted in the tragic loss of Customs staff members who have been targeted by terrorists during anti-smuggling operations. He further stated that the profits from drug trafficking are frequently used to finance terrorism.

The successful interception of a significant quantity of illicit substances at the Torkham border crossing underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and its links to terrorism. The vigilance and dedication of customs officials have once again proven crucial in preventing illegal activities that pose a threat to both national security and public safety.
