The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to a significant humanitarian crisis, affecting countless lives, including those of students aspiring to pursue their education. Among them is Basel Abusafer, a fourth-year medical student from Gaza’s Al-Azhar University. His dreams of becoming a doctor were shattered when Israel launched attacks on his homeland in October last year. Basel, like many others, found himself displaced, losing not only his home but also his hope for a future in medicine. However, a new opportunity has emerged for him and 43 other Palestinian students at Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) in Pakistan, thanks to a scholarship program initiated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Basel shared his story, stating, "The Pakistan government gave us the opportunity to do what many Palestinians still hope for — to continue their studies so we can go back and serve the people as doctors." This sentiment resonates deeply among the Palestinian students who have arrived at RMU, where they are welcomed with open arms. The university recently hosted a ceremony to greet these students, who, despite their tragic circumstances, remain determined to pursue their medical education.

Many of these students have expressed their gratitude for the warm reception they have received in Pakistan. Ghaith Alrayyes, another student, noted that the faculty and fellow students at RMU have gone above and beyond to make them feel at home. However, the psychological scars from their experiences in a war-torn region linger. RMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Umar emphasized the university's commitment to supporting these students, stating that the faculty and student body are working to help alleviate some of the trauma they have endured.

Hammam Mohammad Helessa, who lost many family members in the Israeli bombings, shared his aspiration to fulfill his family's dream of seeing him become a doctor. He hopes to return to Gaza one day to help rebuild the community devastated by conflict. Similarly, Yara Salim, who fled to Egypt with her family, expressed her appreciation for the support they have received in Pakistan, despite facing challenges such as language barriers and differences in educational systems.

To address these challenges, RMU has taken proactive steps. The university has enlisted special Arabic translators to assist the students, and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is working on plans to provide house job training for them. Dr Umar mentioned that the university is also making efforts to bridge the gap in their studies, stating, "The students are sharp and understand things quickly. We have started special classes for them so they can recall their previous lessons." A special committee has been formed to oversee the curriculum adjustments in collaboration with Al-Azhar University.

While the students have been provided accommodations at a hostel, their hearts remain tethered to their homeland. They are eager to return to Palestine once they complete their studies, driven by a strong desire to serve their people. The resilience and determination of these young individuals serve as a powerful reminder of the human spirit's capacity to endure and strive for a better future, even in the face of adversity.

The journey of these displaced Palestinian students at Rawalpindi Medical University is not just about education; it is a testament to hope and resilience. Their stories highlight the importance of international solidarity and support in times of crisis. As they navigate their new environment and pursue their dreams, they carry with them the aspirations of their families and communities back home, reminding us all of the profound impact education can have in rebuilding lives and nations.
