Kalam's winter charm attracts eco-tourists with stunning landscapes, local cuisine, and improved infrastructure for adventure and safety.
As winter descends upon the breathtaking Kalam valleys, a stunning transformation occurs. The region, blanketed in a pristine layer of snow, has become a magnet for eco-tourists seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This winter season, visitors from the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have flocked to this serene paradise, eager to indulge in local delicacies and immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty that Kalam has to offer.
The weekend saw local hotels filled to capacity, as families gathered to enjoy the crisp winter air, the fragrant scent of deodar trees, and the melodic chirping of birds nestled in the lush green forests. Among the culinary delights that have captured the hearts of eco-tourists is the famous Chappli Kabab, a rich and spiced meat patty that has become a favorite, alongside the renowned trout fish. Haseeb Khan, a tourist from Peshawar, expressed his delight, stating, "The weather in Kalam is amazing. We have had a wonderful time amidst this beautiful setting, filled with great fun and excitement and will come again for snowfall."
As Kalam transforms into a winter wonderland, visitors are enchanted by the ethereal beauty of Mahodand Lake, located at an altitude of 9,400 feet. This pristine body of water, with its striking bluish-white hue, serves as a picturesque backdrop for those seeking tranquility and outdoor adventure. A leisurely boating trip across the lake’s chilly waters has become a popular activity, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature’s grandeur. Lecturer Naveed Khan from Nowshera shared his experience, saying, "I came to Kalam with my family after three years to enjoy its mesmerizing natural beauty and cold weather on the weekend." He added, "Every sun ray adds to the winter magic, enhancing the lush greenery and the lake’s emerald allure."
The enhanced infrastructure and the Swat motorway have significantly improved access for tourists, allowing them to partake in various adventure sports in Upper Swat, further elevating the lake’s appeal. Saad Khan, a spokesman for the Tourism and Culture Authority, highlighted the elaborate arrangements made for accommodating and facilitating tourists during the winter season in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Under the Development of Ecotourism Project (ETP), camping pods with facilities for two to four beds, along with washrooms and kitchens, have been established at various scenic locations, including Malakand and Hazara divisions.
In addition to the camping pods at Gabeen Jabba near Mahodand Lake and Sharan near Saiful Malook Lake, ten more camping pods have been installed at different tourism spots to provide affordable accommodations for families. These pods, located in areas such as Sharan Kaghan Mansehra and Bamburait Chitral, offer a cozy stay at a fraction of the cost of private hotels, which charge between Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 per room.
To ensure the safety of tourists, the presence of security personnel has been increased at popular tourist spots. This initiative has made visitors feel more secure, contributing to a rise in the number of tourists during the winter months. The tourism police force, comprising well-trained officers fluent in multiple languages, is equipped to handle any situation that may arise. A mobile application called the "Tourist Safety App" has also been launched, enabling tourists to quickly contact the police in case of emergencies.
Moreover, the government has invested heavily in improving infrastructure, including roads, transportation, and accommodation facilities. The construction of new hotels, resorts, and rest houses has made it easier for tourists to find suitable accommodations, while enhanced road networks have reduced congestion at established tourism stations. Muhammad Ali Syed, General Manager of the Tourism and Culture Authority, mentioned that various waterfalls in the region are being developed to promote ecotourism, with jeep tracks and roads being constructed to link these stunning natural attractions.
The winter charm of Kalam not only captivates the hearts of eco-tourists but also plays a vital role in boosting the local economy. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich culinary offerings, and improved infrastructure, Kalam stands as a testament to the beauty of nature and the importance of sustainable tourism. As more visitors discover this enchanting locale, it is essential to preserve its natural beauty for future generations to enjoy. So, whether you are seeking adventure or tranquility, Kalam is undoubtedly a destination worth exploring this winter.
