Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Strengthened with Rs7bn Funding

PESHAWAR: In a significant move to bolster the law enforcement capabilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur convened a crucial meeting to address the pressing security challenges faced by the province, particularly in the southern and merged districts. The meeting, which included key officials such as the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police, and various advisors, focused on the current security landscape and the necessary steps to enhance police effectiveness in these areas.

During the meeting, it was revealed that a substantial allocation of 7 billion rupees has been earmarked to strengthen the police force in the merged districts. This funding will facilitate the acquisition of 122 new bulletproof vehicles and an additional 1 billion rupees dedicated to providing Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) vehicles. These measures aim to equip the police with the necessary tools to effectively manage the security situation.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced the approval of 1,300 new positions within the police force, specifically targeting the districts of Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Lakki Marwat. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing local residents for these positions, ensuring that the recruitment process benefits the community directly. In a commendable move, the quota for children of martyred police personnel for the position of Assistant Sub-Inspector has been increased by 100%, reflecting the government's commitment to supporting the families of those who have sacrificed their lives for peace.

Gandapur expressed regret over the historical neglect of police strengthening but assured that the current provincial government is fully committed to improving law and order. He directed the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive survey of damages in the merged districts and compile accurate data for compensation. Additionally, he urged the implementation of a new mining policy to create maximum employment opportunities in these areas.

Healthcare and education facilities were also highlighted as critical areas needing attention. The Chief Minister called for the organization of sports and other healthy activities for the youth, aiming to divert them from negative influences. He acknowledged that maintaining law and order is a significant challenge and stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, including local elders.

In a bid to resolve law and order issues, Gandapur proposed regular local jirgas, involving community leaders and opinion makers. He also instructed the district administration to hold open courts (Khuli Kachehris) regularly, ensuring that all departments and elected representatives are involved. This initiative aims to instill confidence in the public that their concerns are being addressed seriously at the local level.

Notably, the Chief Minister shared that recent issues in Bannu and Lakki Marwat were resolved peacefully through jirgas, with a remarkable implementation rate of 15 out of 16 points from the Bannu Peace Committee. He commended the efforts of local elders, police, and the administration in achieving a ceasefire in Kurram, with plans to remove heavy weapons and posts from the area in consultation with local leaders.
