Malteser International's delegation visits Khairpur to support flood recovery and community resilience initiatives.
SUKKUR - In a significant move towards recovery and resilience, a delegation from Malteser International’s Islamabad Country Office visited the Protection Bund rehabilitation infrastructure project in Khairpur on Monday. This project is a crucial response to the devastating effects of the 2022 floods that impacted many communities across Pakistan. The aim is clear: to protect vulnerable populations from the threats of displacement, migration, and health issues while also addressing agricultural crop loss and environmental pollution.
During their visit, the delegation, led by Ms. Yalim Hyariye and Ammar, engaged directly with beneficiaries of the project. They observed various interventions designed to support the local community, including the establishment of animal shelters, kitchen garden support for growers, and training programs for artisans in sewing. These initiatives are not just about immediate relief; they are about building a sustainable future for the people of Khairpur.
The delegation's comprehensive visit to Taluka Mirwah, located in the district of Khairpur, was part of a broader initiative titled "Restoring Livelihoods and Protection against Climate Risks for Vulnerable Communities in Khairpur." This project is implemented by the Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO), which has been instrumental in fostering community development and resilience.
In their discussions with field teams from Malteser International’s BMZ-funded projects in Khairpur and Mirpurkhas districts, the delegation praised the efforts of community institutions. These institutions play a vital role in empowering local residents and enhancing their capacity to withstand future climate-related challenges.
As we reflect on the visit and the ongoing efforts in Khairpur, it is essential to recognize the importance of community-driven initiatives in disaster recovery. The collaboration between international organizations and local communities not only aids in immediate recovery but also lays the groundwork for a more resilient future. By investing in local capacities and fostering sustainable practices, we can help ensure that vulnerable communities are better prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
