Pakistan Railways announces a 105km rail line from Thar Coal mines to Port Qasim, enhancing coal transport and saving $1.5 billion annually.

In a significant development for Pakistan's transportation infrastructure, Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced the construction of a new railway line that will stretch 105 kilometers, connecting the Thar Coal mines to Port Qasim. This initiative is not just about laying tracks; it represents a strategic effort to enhance the country’s bulk transportation capabilities and support economic growth. With the completion date set for October 2025, this project is a collaborative effort funded by both the Sindh provincial government and the federal government.

The new rail link, which will run from Islamkot to Chhor, is expected to revolutionize coal transportation across Pakistan. By providing a more cost-effective fuel alternative, it will significantly benefit key industries such as cement and textiles. The Federal Secretary for Railways, Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, shared these details during a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Railways, highlighting the importance of this project for the nation’s economy.

As part of the construction, a 24.58-kilometer loop-line and an 18-kilometer double line track will be built, extending from Bin Qasim railway station to Port Qasim. Additionally, there will be 4.20 kilometers of loop-lines designed to manage substantial freight volumes. Once completed, this rail network is projected to have the capacity to transport an impressive 10 million tons of coal annually. This shift from imported to domestic coal sources is expected to save the national exchequer around $1.5 billion each year in fuel import costs.

Moreover, the project will introduce seven new railway stations along the route, including two major stations at the Thar coal mines and the new Chhor station, along with five intermediate stations. This expansion will facilitate efficient coal transport, making it easier for industries to access the resources they need.

The construction of this railway line is a pivotal step towards enhancing Pakistan's energy independence and economic stability. By investing in domestic coal transportation, the country is not only reducing its reliance on imported fuels but also paving the way for a more sustainable future. As this project progresses, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the local economy and the broader energy landscape in Pakistan.
