Protests Erupt Over Rape Allegations in Lahore, Punjab

In recent days, Lahore has become the epicenter of intense protests following disputed allegations of rape involving a student from a private college. The situation escalated when claims surfaced on social media that a female student had been raped by a security guard at the college. This sparked outrage among students, leading to demonstrations that have now spread across Punjab.

The protests began on a Monday, with students rallying for justice and demanding accountability for what they perceive as a mishandling of the case. Despite the arrest of the security guard and an ongoing police investigation, authorities have not yet found solid evidence to support the rape claims. On Tuesday, the protests continued, with a significant number of students staging a sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly on Charing Cross Mall Road. The area was heavily monitored by police, especially after a violent clash on Monday that left 28 people injured, including four police officers.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Punjab police released a statement challenging the validity of the rape allegations. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Defence, Shehrbano Naqvi, provided crucial context during an interview with 'Geo Pakistan.' She explained that the supposed victim had been hospitalized for unrelated medical issues ten days prior to the alleged incident. ASP Naqvi noted that confusion arose among students due to two individuals sharing the same name, one of whom was in good health while the other was recovering from an accident at home.

The unrest has not been confined to Lahore alone. Reports indicate incidents of vandalism at a college building in Multan, as well as disruptive protests in Jahanian and Zafarwal, where students organized a motorcycle rally and blocked traffic by setting tires ablaze. These actions prompted a police response that included arrests and the use of batons to disperse the crowds.

In light of the escalating situation, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has taken action by forming a six-member committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations. Additionally, Lahore police are actively seeking more information from the public through the Virtual Women Police Station, aiming to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the family of the girl at the center of the allegations has publicly denied the claims of sexual assault. In a video message, the girl's father and uncle, both wearing masks, expressed their disbelief at the protests and confirmed that she is currently in intensive care following a fall at their home. The police have urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and have assured that they are committed to registering cases and pursuing investigations into all alleged offenses of this nature.
