PTA and FIA launch operations against SIM card fraud, arresting suspects and confiscating illegal devices in Pakistan.

In recent years, the issue of SIM card fraud has become a significant concern in Pakistan. The illegal issuance of SIM cards not only poses a threat to national security but also exploits vulnerable populations. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been actively working to combat this issue, ensuring that the integrity of telecommunications in the country is maintained. This commitment was recently highlighted through a series of successful operations conducted in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

On November 14, 2024, the PTA's Zonal Office in Peshawar, along with the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, executed raids on Zong franchisees located in Barakahu, Islamabad, and Shinkiari, District Mansehra. These franchisees were found to be involved in the illegal issuance of SIM cards by deceitfully obtaining fingerprints from underprivileged women in various villages of Orakzai Agency. Such practices not only violate the law but also take advantage of those who are often unaware of the implications of their fingerprints being misused.

During the raid in Barakahu, authorities confiscated a substantial amount of evidence, including 6 Biometric Verification System (BVS) devices, 8 activated SIM cards, and 200 suspected SIM cards. Additionally, 2 computers and digital fingerprints were seized, along with several original Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) and 6 mobile phones. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals, and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against them.

Similarly, the raid in Shinkiari yielded impressive results, with the recovery of 7 BVS devices, 1 activated SIM card, and 300 suspected SIM cards. Authorities also found a tampered BVS device, several original CNICs, and 3 mobile phones. One individual was arrested during this operation, and an FIR was also filed.

The PTA had previously filed complaints with the FIA regarding these illegal activities, based on credible information about the sales channels involved. This crackdown is part of the PTA's ongoing efforts to curtail the illegal issuance of SIM cards, demonstrating the Authority's unwavering dedication to eradicating this menace.

As the PTA continues its fight against SIM card fraud, it is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant. Awareness about the proper procedures for obtaining SIM cards and the potential risks associated with sharing personal information can help protect individuals from becoming victims of such fraudulent activities. The recent actions taken by the PTA and FIA serve as a reminder that the authorities are committed to ensuring a safer telecommunications environment for all Pakistanis.
