Punjab's educational institutions will remain closed until November 24 due to worsening smog, with online classes implemented for students.
LAHORE – In response to the worsening smog situation in Punjab, the provincial government has taken decisive action by imposing additional restrictions. This move aims to safeguard the health and well-being of residents, particularly students, who are most vulnerable during this time of year. The notification issued by Punjab’s Director General of Environment, Imran Hamid Sheikh, outlines the measures that will be in effect until November 24.
As part of these restrictions, universities and colleges in Lahore and Multan will remain closed. Students will transition to online classes, ensuring that their education continues despite the physical closure of institutions. Meanwhile, schools across all districts, with the exception of Murree, will also be closed, reflecting the government's commitment to prioritizing the safety of children.
In addition to educational institutions, the government has banned all construction activities in Lahore and Multan, with the only exceptions being national-level projects. This ban is crucial as construction sites can contribute significantly to air pollution, exacerbating the already dire smog conditions. Furthermore, heavy traffic entry into these cities is completely prohibited, a measure aimed at reducing vehicular emissions that contribute to air quality deterioration.
Moreover, brick kilns and furnace industries in Lahore and Multan will cease operations, as these are known to be major sources of pollution. Restaurants in these cities will also face restrictions, operating only until 4 PM, with takeaway services permitted between 4 PM and 8 PM. This limitation is intended to minimize outdoor activities during peak pollution hours.
The decision to close educational institutions and impose these restrictions is a clear indication of the government's proactive approach to combatting the smog crisis. It is essential for residents to adhere to these guidelines to protect their health and the environment. As the situation develops, it is crucial for everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The hope is that these measures will lead to improved air quality, allowing students and families to return to their normal routines soon.
