A coordinated strategy involving inspections, fines, and promoting cloth bags has been launched to combat the harmful impact of plastic bags on rivers and aquatic life.

The Assistant Director of the Environmental Protection Agency in Attock, Shehzira Maryam, has issued a pressing call for a strict ban on the use of plastic bags. Maryam emphasized the critical need to address the environmental dangers posed by plastic bags effectively. To tackle this issue, an awareness campaign has been promptly launched, and its enforcement is deemed crucial at this time.

Maryam detailed a coordinated strategy involving the Environmental Protection Agency, district administration, and tehsil administrations. They are planning surprise inspections at markets and tandoors to ensure compliance with the ban. Initially, shopkeepers caught using plastic bags will have them confiscated, and fines ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 20000 will be levied as necessary. Maryam also encouraged the public to opt for cloth bags as a more sustainable alternative.

Highlighting the severe impact of plastic bags on rivers, particularly the Indus, Maryam highlighted that pollution from these bags is harming aquatic life, resulting in the death of fish. She emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens in rejecting plastic bags and called for a significant reduction in their usage to safeguard the environment.

The urgent plea from the Environmental Protection Agency underscores the critical need to address the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment. By implementing a strict ban and promoting eco-friendly alternatives like cloth bags, we can all contribute to preserving our rivers and protecting aquatic life. It is imperative for everyone to join hands in this endeavor for a cleaner and greener future.
