US Deputy Chief of Mission Natalie Baker Visits Lahore to Strengthen Ties

On her first visit to Lahore, US Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) Natalie Baker, accompanied by US Consul General Kristin Hawkins, delved into the rich culture of the city while emphasizing the importance of US-Pakistan partnerships. This visit comes at a time when both nations are working to strengthen their ties through various avenues, including trade, investment, and cultural preservation.

During her visit, Ms. Baker engaged with representatives from US businesses to discuss the positive impact American companies are having in Pakistan. These companies are not only creating high-quality jobs for the youth but are also actively contributing to local communities through various corporate initiatives. This engagement highlights the growing economic relationship between the two countries.

In a significant gesture towards promoting gender equality, Ms. Baker and Ms. Hawkins participated in a cricket match with female athletes at the National High-Performance Centre (NHPC). This event underscored the US commitment to empowering young Pakistani women through sports and educational exchange programs. Over the past year, the United States has supported initiatives in 14 schools and universities across Punjab, aimed at expanding opportunities for women and girls to engage in sports and develop essential leadership skills.

Ms. Baker stated, “The United States is deeply committed to advancing gender equity, and ensuring that everyone – regardless of gender or gender identity – has the opportunity to succeed.” She further elaborated on various programs such as the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, the TechGirls exchange initiative, and the Women in Energy Scholars programme, which are designed to equip women and girls with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in their respective fields.

Additionally, DCM Baker met with members of the Pakistan-US Alumni Network, acknowledging the vital role that Pakistani alumni of US-funded exchange programs play in fostering connections between the two nations. These alumni utilize the knowledge and experiences gained during their time in the US to benefit their local communities, thereby strengthening the bond between the countries.

Ms. Baker also took the opportunity to explore the historical Walled City of Lahore, visiting iconic sites such as the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Masjid. During this visit, she highlighted the United States’ investment in 35 cultural preservation projects across Pakistan, including a significant ongoing investment of approximately $1 million aimed at preserving seven sites at the Lahore Fort. “These projects are a testament to the shared commitment between the United States and Pakistan to preserve cultural heritage. They not only strengthen community bonds but also support economic development and inspire future generations to celebrate Pakistan’s rich history and diversity,” said DCM Baker.
