Wasa Lahore is set to complete its fourth underground rainwater storage tank by January 2025, aiming to combat urban flooding effectively.

In recent years, urban flooding has become a pressing issue in many cities, including Lahore. With the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall, the need for effective rainwater management systems has never been more critical. To address this challenge, the Water and Sanitation Authority (Wasa) Lahore is making significant strides in constructing underground rainwater storage tanks. The latest development in this initiative is the construction of the fourth underground rainwater storage tank at Qaddafi Stadium, which is set to be completed by January 2025.

This ambitious project, which comes with a hefty price tag of Rs995 million, aims to be the largest rainwater storage facility in Lahore, boasting a capacity of 4 million gallons. As of now, Wasa has successfully completed 40 percent of the construction work. The primary objectives of these storage tanks are threefold: to efficiently drain rainwater from the streets, thereby ensuring smooth traffic flow; to store rainwater for recharging underground water supplies; and to utilize the stored water for horticultural purposes, thus alleviating the pressure on the city’s underground water resources.

Recently, Wasa Lahore Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shahbaz Ahmed conducted an inspection of the under-construction tank. During this visit, Project Director Usman Babar provided a detailed briefing on the project’s progress. The Vice Chairman emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This project is of utmost importance in conserving rainwater as after its completion, four million gallons of water would be conserved and subsequently used for watering parks and horticulture activities." He further noted that the storage facility would significantly reduce the risk of urban flooding in the vicinity of the stadium.

In addition to the Qaddafi Stadium project, Wasa Lahore has plans to construct nine more underground rainwater storage tanks at various locations throughout the city this year. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance the city’s rainwater management capabilities. Notably, Wasa has already completed similar projects at Lawrence Road, Kashmir Road, and Sheranwala Gate, all of which are currently operational.

During the tenure of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in Punjab, several additional sites were identified for future rainwater storage projects. These locations include Tajpura, Karim Park on Ravi Road, Railway Station, Waris Road, Copper Road, Rasool Park, and the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Allama Iqbal Town, with each site designed to hold between 1.5 million and 1.8 million gallons of rainwater.

As Lahore continues to grapple with the challenges posed by urban flooding, initiatives like the underground rainwater storage tanks represent a proactive approach to managing this critical issue. By investing in such infrastructure, the city not only aims to mitigate flooding but also to promote sustainable water usage practices. The successful implementation of these projects could serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions in urban planning.
