The Zahra Beau Welfare Foundation inaugurates a Newborn Screening center at Holy Family Hospital, offering free services to detect Congenital Hypothyroidism and improve infant health outcomes nationwide.

The Zahra Beau Welfare Foundation (ZBWF) has taken a significant step towards improving infant healthcare by inaugurating the first sample collection center for Newborn Screening at Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi. This initiative aims to provide free Newborn Screening services to all infants, recognizing it as a fundamental right for every child.

The official launch of this initiative was led by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Umar, the Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University, who highlighted the importance of early screening for newborns. Dr. Shabina from the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination also graced the event with her presence, emphasizing the government's support for such crucial healthcare initiatives.

In collaboration with Rawalpindi Medical University, the ZBW Foundation has introduced a program offering complimentary newborn screening services at three prominent public hospitals in Rawalpindi. These hospitals include Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, and Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital. The selection of Holy Family Hospital as the primary location for this project was based on its high birth rate, ensuring maximum outreach for the screening services.

The focus of the screening program is to detect Congenital Hypothyroidism, a prevalent cause of disabilities among newborns in Pakistan. Early identification of this condition can significantly impact the long-term health outcomes of infants, reducing the risk of complications and mortality rates.

Since its inception in 2016, the Zahra Beau Welfare Foundation has been at the forefront of implementing the Newborn Screening (NBS) program nationwide. With over 64,000 newborns already screened, the foundation has played a vital role in early detection and diagnosis of disorders that may not be apparent at birth. This proactive approach has proven instrumental in preventing health complications and enhancing the overall well-being of infants across Pakistan.

ZBWF, a non-profit organization registered under section 42 of the Companies Act, 2017, and endorsed by the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP), continues to drive impactful initiatives in the realm of infant healthcare, setting a benchmark for philanthropic endeavors in the country.

The establishment of the Newborn Screening center at Holy Family Hospital marks a significant milestone in promoting early healthcare interventions for newborns in Pakistan. Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast commitment to improving infant health outcomes, the Zahra Beau Welfare Foundation is paving the way for a healthier future generation. By prioritizing free screening services and raising awareness about critical health issues, ZBWF is not only saving lives but also fostering a culture of proactive healthcare practices within the community.
