Dr. Alvi seeks JUI-F support as PTI faces challenges in passing controversial constitutional amendments amid political tensions.

In the ever-evolving political landscape of Pakistan, the tussle between the government and opposition parties has reached a critical juncture. The focus of this ongoing battle is the proposed judiciary-centric constitutional amendments, which have sparked intense discussions among key political figures. On Tuesday, former President Dr. Arif Alvi, representing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), made a strategic move by meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F). This meeting aimed to garner support from the JUI-F as the government seeks to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament for the passage of these amendments.

Dr. Alvi, accompanied by PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, engaged in talks with Maulana Fazl and other JUI-F leaders, including Maulana Ataul Haq Darvesh, Maulana Asad Mahmood, Akhunzada Hussain, and Abdul Jalil Jan. The discussions revolved around the political developments and the contentious constitutional amendments that are currently on the table. The JUI-F has emerged as a significant player in this political drama, with both the government and opposition vying for its support.

At the heart of the proposed amendments is the extension of the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is set to retire in October this year, along with changes to the retirement age of judges. However, the government faces a daunting challenge, as it currently lacks the necessary votes to pass these amendments. Specifically, it is short of 13 votes in the National Assembly and nine in the Senate. In light of this, the ruling coalition has decided to 'indefinitely postpone' the tabling of the constitutional package until it can ensure sufficient strength in parliament.

Opposition parties, including PTI and JUI-F, have criticized the government's approach, accusing it of being secretive regarding the content of the proposed amendments. They argue that the original draft should be presented in parliament for thorough debate before any approval is granted. In a bid to sway Maulana Fazl, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, along with a delegation, visited Fazl's residence on Monday. However, this meeting did not yield any conclusive results.

During the discussions, PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar, who was present at the Bilawal-Fazl meeting, revealed that the JUI-F had shown some willingness to cooperate. He stated that the JUI-F "agreed on the formation of a constitutional court; however, he has some differences over its modus operandi." This indicates that while there is a potential for collaboration, significant differences remain that need to be addressed.

As the political drama unfolds, it is clear that the fate of these constitutional amendments hangs in the balance. The ongoing negotiations highlight the complexities of coalition politics in Pakistan, where alliances can shift rapidly. The outcome of these discussions will not only impact the judiciary but also set a precedent for future legislative processes in the country. As citizens watch closely, the importance of transparency and collaboration in governance becomes ever more apparent. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the government can rally the necessary support to push through these contentious amendments or if the opposition will successfully thwart their efforts.
