Nawaz Sharif asserts Imran Khan's upcoming protest on November 24 will fail, citing PTI's lack of achievements.
LONDON - In a recent statement, Nawaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former Prime Minister, expressed his firm belief that the upcoming protest called by Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on November 24 will ultimately fail. Nawaz made these remarks while addressing reporters in London, just before his return to Pakistan alongside his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and his grandson Junaid Safdar.
Nawaz Sharif, who had been on trips to the UK and the US since October 26, spent some time in Geneva with his family. His daughter, Maryam, had also visited Geneva earlier this month for medical treatment. When questioned about the purpose of PTI's protest and its potential to disrupt Pakistan's economic progress, Nawaz was clear in his response. He stated, "I agree with you but they will fail in their mission," indicating his confidence in the current government's ability to maintain stability.
During the informal interaction with reporters, Nawaz was also asked about rumors suggesting he would remain in London and not return to Pakistan. He firmly dismissed these claims, stating, "I will call those people a liar." This response highlights his commitment to returning to his home country despite the ongoing political turmoil.
Nawaz further criticized Imran Khan and the PTI's nationwide protest call, reiterating his previous statements about the former ruling party's lack of achievements during its tenure. He questioned, "What Imran Khan has done during his tenure that people would take to the streets on his call? Tell me a single [development] project that he could proudly present as evidence of development during his tenure." This statement underscores Nawaz's belief that the PTI has not delivered on its promises to the people of Pakistan.
According to Nawaz, Pakistan is now on a path to prosperity after overcoming various challenges. He emphasized that obstacles are being created in the way of development and that those responsible for harming the country must be held accountable before making any calls for protests. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among PML-N supporters who believe that the current government is working towards a better future for the nation.
It is important to note that the November 24 protest was announced by Khan's lawyer and sister just three days ago, described as a final call to topple the current rulers. Faisal Chaudhry, Khan's lawyer, stated that the protest would not only take place in Islamabad but also across Pakistan and globally, wherever Khan's supporters are present. This indicates a significant mobilization effort by the PTI, aiming to rally support against the government.
As the political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve, the upcoming protest will be a critical moment for both the PTI and the PML-N. The outcome of this protest could have lasting implications for the country's political stability and economic trajectory. For citizens, it is essential to stay informed and engaged in the political process, as the decisions made by their leaders will shape the future of Pakistan.
