WNBA superstar Brittney Griner recently shared her traumatic experience during her nine-month imprisonment in a Russian jail, where she contemplated suicide and endured dehumanizing conditions.

Griner, detained in a Moscow airport in February 2022 on drug charges, revealed in an upcoming interview with ABC Television that she felt overwhelmed and hopeless during her time in captivity.

She described the appalling conditions in the Russian penal colony, including a blood-stained mattress, lack of basic necessities like soap and toilet paper, and encountering a large knife in her room.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion, was eventually released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap deal. She expressed her determination never to play basketball abroad again after her traumatic experience.

The basketball player's full interview, scheduled to air on May 1, will provide further insights into her ordeal. Griner's upcoming memoir, detailing her time in Russian custody, is set to be released next month.
