Will Jacks emphasizes the need for patience as England's new ODI squad adapts to the format after a crucial victory against Australia.

LONDON: In a recent match, Will Jacks expressed that England’s newly formed one-day cricket team requires time to adapt to a format they seldom play. This statement came after England managed to defeat Australia, keeping their five-match series alive. Jacks showcased his talent by scoring an impressive 84 runs, while Harry Brook, who also scored a century, helped lead the team to a rain-affected victory in Durham on Tuesday. This win was crucial, especially after England faced defeats in the first two matches against the reigning world champions.

England's current squad is notably different from the one that triumphed in the 2019 World Cup. The absence of experienced players like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow has placed the responsibility on a younger generation of cricketers. Jacks and Brook, despite their potential, have limited experience in the 50-over format. Neither player has participated in county cricket’s One-Day Cup since 2019, as many leading white-ball players have opted out of the tournament due to the introduction of The Hundred, which has further congested the cricket calendar.

Jacks, who is only 25 years old, acknowledged the challenges posed by the lack of 50-over cricket. He stated, "With the lack of 50-over cricket that we play now, finding that tempo can be difficult." He emphasized that the current schedule is beyond their control, saying, "We just go where we’re told." Jacks believes that as they prepare for major events, they will have more opportunities to play, but the influence of television and scheduling remains a significant factor.

Despite his limited experience, Jacks has made a mark in the 50-over format, achieving four half-centuries in just 10 one-day internationals. Following two heavy losses at Trent Bridge and Headingley, England's victory at the Riverside by 46 runs, using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method due to weather interruptions, was a significant morale booster. This win also marked Australia’s first defeat after an impressive streak of 14 consecutive victories in the format.

As England navigates through this transitional phase, it is clear that patience and practice will be essential for the new players to find their rhythm in one-day cricket. The journey may be challenging, but with each game, they are making progress. Fans and cricket enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how this young squad develops and whether they can rise to the occasion in future matches.
