PCB confirms Jason Gillespie will continue as red-ball coach, while Aqib Javed is a candidate for the white-ball head coach position.
In a recent announcement that has put to rest swirling rumors, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Jason Gillespie will continue in his role as the red-ball coach of the national cricket team. This clarification comes after a media report suggested that Gillespie, a former Australian cricketer, was set to be replaced. The PCB has firmly stated that Gillespie, who is also serving as the interim head coach for the white-ball format, will lead the team in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa.
The PCB spokesperson emphasized that there is no truth to the claims made by a cricket-based website, which suggested that Gillespie would be relieved of his duties and replaced by Aqib Javed. Javed, currently a member of the PCB's selection committee, has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the head coach position of the national men’s white-ball team. Sources indicate that Javed is being considered for this role, especially with the white-ball series against Zimbabwe approaching.
The upcoming series against Zimbabwe, which includes three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from November 24 to December 5, is expected to be a significant assignment for the new head coach. Javed's extensive coaching experience, particularly his successful tenures with domestic teams and franchise cricket, has made him a strong contender for the position.
This development follows the unexpected resignation of Gary Kirsten from the head coach role, just days before the team was scheduled to depart for Australia. In light of this, the PCB appointed Gillespie on an interim basis to guide the team during the ongoing tour of Australia. Gillespie has made it clear that he is not interested in taking on the role of head coach permanently, stating, "I've only taken over white-ball format coaching on an interim basis. I am not keen on coaching permanently in the white ball format at the moment." He further expressed his desire to spend more time with his family, highlighting the challenges of being away from home for extended periods.
As the cricketing landscape continues to evolve, the PCB's decision to retain Gillespie as the red-ball coach while exploring options for the white-ball head coach position reflects a strategic approach to team management. With the upcoming series against South Africa and Zimbabwe, fans and players alike will be keenly watching how these changes unfold. The PCB's commitment to maintaining stability in the coaching staff while also considering new leadership for the white-ball format could prove crucial for the team's performance in the near future.
