Panama's national football team faces a setback as captain Anibal Godoy's injury leads to a replacement search for Copa America, with Harold Cummings declining the call-up.
Panama's national football team faced a setback as their captain, Anibal Godoy, suffered a left thigh injury just before their Copa America opener against Uruguay. This injury led coach Thomas Christiansen to search for a replacement to fill the crucial position in the team. Initially, defender Harold Cummings from Guatemalan club Xelaju was selected as the replacement. However, Cummings declined the call-up, citing his belief that he was not at the required level to represent his country.
The Panamanian Football Federation (FPF) officially confirmed Godoy's injury and the subsequent need for a replacement to finalize the 26-man squad for the tournament. With Cummings' refusal, Panama proceeded with a 25-man squad for the Copa America, gearing up to face tough opponents in Group C, including Uruguay, the United States, and Bolivia.
During a press conference, Cummings elaborated on his decision, stressing the importance of honesty with oneself, the coach, teammates, and the nation. Panama's national team now faces the challenge of competing in the prestigious Copa America without their captain, as they aim to make their mark in the tournament and showcase their talent on the international stage.
