PCB appoints Aqib Javed as interim head coach for white-ball formats ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
On November 18, 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a significant announcement regarding the future of the national men's cricket team. The board has officially appointed Aqib Javed, a former international fast bowler, as the interim head coach for the white-ball formats. This decision comes as the team prepares for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to take place from February 19 to March 9, 2025.
Aqib Javed, who has a rich history in cricket, will not only take on the role of head coach but will also continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee. This dual responsibility indicates the PCB's confidence in his abilities to guide the team through this crucial period. Following the ICC Champions Trophy, Aqib will be assigned additional responsibilities, showcasing the board's commitment to a structured approach in developing the team.
The white-ball coaching position became available after Gary Kirsten resigned, prompting the PCB to seek a suitable replacement. In the interim, red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has been coaching the team during their recent tour of Australia. He is expected to rejoin the squad for the upcoming two-Test series in South Africa, ensuring continuity in coaching as the team navigates through various formats.
Looking ahead, the Pakistan men’s cricket team has a busy schedule. They are set to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5. Following that, they will participate in another series of white-ball matches in South Africa from December 10 to 22. These matches are crucial as they will serve as preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy.
In addition to these international fixtures, Pakistan will host New Zealand and South Africa for an ODI triangular series from February 8 to 14, 2025. This series will provide an excellent opportunity for the team to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum leading into the prestigious Champions Trophy.
The PCB has also announced that they will begin the recruitment process for a permanent white-ball head coach. The goal is to finalize this appointment by the end of the ICC Champions Trophy, ensuring that the team has a stable leadership structure moving forward. This proactive approach reflects the PCB's commitment to enhancing the performance of the national team.
The appointment of Aqib Javed as interim head coach marks a pivotal moment for Pakistan cricket. With a busy schedule ahead and the Champions Trophy on the horizon, the team will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to showcase their talent on the international stage. As fans, we can only hope that this new chapter brings success and glory to Pakistan cricket.
