Sanath Jayasuriya is likely to continue as Sri Lanka's head coach following successful negotiations and recent team victories.

In recent developments within the realm of cricket, former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya is poised to continue as the full-time head coach of the national men’s team. This comes after the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board has been deliberating on extending his contract, as reported by Cricinfo. Jayasuriya initially stepped into the role of interim head coach in July, taking over from Chris Silverwood, a former England pacer who resigned following Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Since taking charge, Jayasuriya has led the team to notable successes, including a recent whitewash of New Zealand in a two-match home Test series. This victory marks Sri Lanka’s first series win against New Zealand since 2009, when they achieved a 2-0 triumph at home. Additionally, under his guidance, the team also secured a win against England in the Oval Test earlier this month and clinched a home ODI series against India. These achievements have certainly bolstered his position as a potential full-time coach.

According to SLC board CEO Ashley de Silva, negotiations regarding Jayasuriya’s contract are in the final stages. He stated, “We are in the final stages of negotiating the contract with him. Probably in the next two or three days, you will get to hear more.” This statement indicates that an official announcement regarding his full-time appointment could be imminent.

Support for Jayasuriya has also come from senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who praised the coach for his effective communication and ability to foster a positive environment for the players. Mathews remarked, “Sanath Jayasuriya was superb as cricket director and now as a coach. He communicates well and has given us a lot of freedom. We are all working towards one goal, and now everyone is on the same page. He’s also done a superb job grooming the players. He has been amazing. I wish him all the very best.”

As Sri Lanka Cricket navigates through this transitional phase, the potential extension of Jayasuriya’s contract could signify a commitment to stability and growth within the team. His leadership style and recent successes may very well be the catalyst needed for Sri Lanka to regain its stature in international cricket. With the cricketing world watching closely, fans and players alike will be eager to see how this decision unfolds and what it means for the future of Sri Lankan cricket.
