Australia secures a thrilling ODI victory over Pakistan in Melbourne, with Starc's three wickets and Cummins' crucial innings.
MELBOURNE: In a thrilling encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia managed to secure a narrow victory over Pakistan in the first of three one-day internationals. Chasing a target of 204 runs, Australia reached their goal with 99 balls to spare, but not without facing a significant challenge as they lost three wickets in just five balls.
Skipper Pat Cummins played a crucial role in guiding his team to victory, remaining unbeaten on 32 runs. Reflecting on the match, Cummins stated, “Wonderful match but it got a little tighter than I would have liked it there.” The absence of regular openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, who are on paternity leave, led to a new opening partnership featuring Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short. However, Short's innings was short-lived as he was dismissed for a mere four runs, caught by Saim Ayub off the bowling of Shaheen Shah Afridi. Fraser-McGurk also fell cheaply, scoring 16 runs before being caught by Irfan Khan off Naseem Shah.
As the innings progressed, experienced batsman Steve Smith and Josh Inglis steadied the ship, forming a vital partnership of 85 runs for the third wicket. Smith scored 44 runs before being dismissed by Haris Rauf, with Ayub taking a well-judged catch at backward point. Inglis followed soon after, scoring 49 runs, but his dismissal triggered a mini-collapse as Australia found themselves in a precarious position at 139-6. Rauf's impressive bowling also accounted for Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell, leaving Australia in a tight spot.
Mohammad Hasnain added to Pakistan's hopes by dismissing Aaron Hardie, while Sean Abbott's lazy run-out left Australia needing 19 runs with only two wickets remaining. However, Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who took two wickets earlier in the match, managed to guide their team to safety.
On the other hand, Pakistan's innings was marked by struggles against Australia's disciplined bowling attack. Newly appointed skipper Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with 44 runs, but the team was all out in the 47th over after being sent in to bat by Australia. Rizwan expressed his thoughts post-match, saying, “We need to play teams like that. We decided whatever the situation we will fight and show courage.”
Pakistan's innings began with a setback as Starc struck early, dismissing Saim Ayub in the third over. Babar Azam, who returned to the team after stepping down from captaincy, looked promising but fell victim to Adam Zampa, who bowled him for 37 runs. The wickets continued to tumble, with Rizwan's dismissal coming at a crucial moment, leaving Pakistan in a difficult position at 70-4 after 19 overs.
Despite a late flurry of runs, including an entertaining 24 from Afridi, Pakistan's batting lineup struggled to build partnerships, ultimately leading to their downfall. The match showcased the importance of resilience and teamwork in cricket, as both teams faced their own challenges throughout the game.
As the series continues, both teams will look to improve their performances. Australia will aim to build on this victory, while Pakistan will seek to bounce back and demonstrate their fighting spirit in the upcoming matches. The excitement of one-day internationals lies in their unpredictability, and fans can expect more thrilling encounters in the days to come.
