Don't Nod pauses two projects after disappointing sales, focusing on promising title 'Lost Records: Bloom & Rage' for future success.
Don't Nod, the original developer behind the popular game series "Life is Strange," has recently faced challenges as it begins the 2024/25 financial year. The studio has announced that it is pressing pause on two of its projects due to disappointing commercial results from its latest releases, "Jusant" and "Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden." Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, these games did not perform as well as expected in the market, prompting the company to reevaluate its future plans.
In its latest financial report, Don't Nod expressed its disappointment, stating that the performance of these titles led to a decline in their half-year results. Oskar Guilbert, the chairman and CEO of Don't Nod, acknowledged the competitive nature of the gaming industry, saying, "We are obviously disappointed by our recent performance in an extremely competitive and selective market." This situation has forced the studio to consider all possible options regarding its roadmap.
As a result of these challenges, Don't Nod has decided to temporarily pause two projects that were still in the design phase. This strategic move aims to allow the studio to focus its resources on projects that show the greatest potential for success. One project that is now being prioritized is "Lost Records: Bloom & Rage," which received a particularly positive reception at Gamescom. The first part of this episodic narrative adventure is expected to be released in February 2025.
Don't Nod had previously announced that it was working on seven games as of March 2024, including the two that are now on hold. The studio has undergone an internal restructuring, creating three branches to focus on different types of games: role-playing games, narrative adventure games, and action-adventure games. This restructuring reflects the studio's commitment to improving its game development process and ensuring that future titles meet both critical and commercial expectations.
While Don't Nod is currently facing a rough patch, the studio's decision to pause certain projects and focus on those with the most promise could lead to a stronger lineup in the future. The gaming industry is known for its ups and downs, and with the right adjustments, Don't Nod may very well bounce back and continue to deliver engaging and innovative gaming experiences for its fans.
