The U.S. FTC refers a complaint against TikTok for potential children's privacy violations, amidst legal challenges and data misuse allegations.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken action against popular social media platform TikTok and its parent company ByteDance for potential violations of children's privacy. The FTC has referred a complaint to the Justice Department, citing concerns that the companies may be breaching the law and acting against the public interest.

In 2020, reports surfaced indicating that both the FTC and the Justice Department were investigating claims that TikTok had failed to comply with a 2019 agreement aimed at protecting children's privacy. Despite typically keeping such referrals confidential, the FTC deemed it necessary to make this case public.

TikTok responded to the FTC's decision by expressing disappointment and defending itself against the allegations. The company stated that many of the accusations were based on inaccurate information or had already been addressed. TikTok emphasized its willingness to collaborate on finding a resolution.

Aside from the privacy concerns, there are ongoing worries in Congress regarding the potential misuse of data from TikTok's 170 million U.S. users by the Chinese government. TikTok has denied these allegations, asserting that it operates independently from any government influence.

Meanwhile, TikTok is gearing up to present its legal arguments in a lawsuit challenging a law passed in April. This law requires ByteDance to divest TikTok's U.S. assets by a specified deadline or face a ban.

The FTC's referral of the complaint against TikTok underscores the importance of protecting children's privacy online. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome will not only impact TikTok and ByteDance but also set a precedent for how social media companies handle user data and privacy concerns in the future.
