Google announces local manufacturing of 500,000 Chromebooks in Pakistan, aiming to boost IT exports and empower youth.
In a groundbreaking move for Pakistan's technology landscape, global tech giant Google has announced its plan to manufacture half a million Chromebooks locally. This initiative is not just a business venture; it represents a significant step towards enhancing the country's digital capabilities and empowering its youth. The formal launch took place during a ceremony in Islamabad, where Scott Beaumont, the President of Google Asia Pacific (APAC), presented the first locally manufactured Chromebook to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
During the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Google for its contributions to the global tech ecosystem and its commitment to Pakistan. He highlighted the immense potential of the country's youth in the field of information technology (IT), stating that they could play a vital role in driving economic growth. The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of investing in education and empowering young people, urging both federal and provincial governments to utilize available resources effectively to support these initiatives.
In a bold declaration, PM Shehbaz set an ambitious target for the IT sector, aiming for $25 billion in IT exports over the next five years. He described this goal as “quite achievable” and called upon IT experts, entrepreneurs, and freelancers to collaborate with the government to realize this vision. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of promoting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as a means to further stimulate economic growth.
During his address, the Prime Minister also expressed his commitment to digitizing Pakistan’s governance system. He believes that a digital approach will help eliminate corruption and enhance efficiency within government operations. The vision includes transitioning to a paperless system, which would ensure transparency and streamline administrative processes for the public's benefit. To facilitate this transition, the government has appointed a new IT secretary through a transparent selection process.
Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, also spoke at the event, underscoring Google’s role in supporting Pakistan’s digitization efforts. She highlighted the significance of public-private partnerships in advancing the country’s digital infrastructure, which is crucial for fostering innovation and growth.
Farhan S. Qureshi, Google’s Regional Director for Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, emphasized the vast opportunities within Pakistan’s tech sector, particularly for freelancers. He pointed out that by focusing on technology, Pakistan could stimulate economic activity and create more job opportunities for its workforce.
The event was attended by key government officials, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, showcasing the government’s strong commitment to driving IT development in Pakistan. This initiative by Google not only signifies a partnership between a global tech leader and Pakistan but also reflects a shared vision for a digitally empowered future.
As Pakistan embarks on this exciting journey towards technological advancement, it is essential for all stakeholders—government, private sector, and the youth—to work collaboratively. The success of this initiative could pave the way for a more robust economy, increased job opportunities, and a brighter future for the next generation. With the right investments and a focus on education, Pakistan can truly unlock its potential in the global tech arena.
