In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a group of NATO allies has unveiled the first set of companies to receive funding from the alliance's one billion euro innovation fund. The NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), backed by 24 out of NATO's 32 member states, aims to invest in cutting-edge technologies to enhance defense capabilities.

Four European tech firms have been selected as recipients of the fund. Fractile, a chipmaker based in London, is dedicated to enhancing the efficiency of large language models. ARX Robotics, a German company, specializes in developing unmanned robots for various tasks. iCOMAT, a British firm, focuses on producing lightweight materials for vehicles. Space Forge, a Welsh company, is leveraging space conditions to manufacture semiconductors in orbit.

Andrea Traversone, the managing partner of the fund, stressed the significance of granting access to strategic technologies to safeguard the security and prosperity of the alliance's one billion citizens. The NIF is collaborating with venture capital firms like Alpine Space Ventures, OTB Ventures, Join Capital, and Vsquared Ventures to further bolster investments in deep tech across Europe.

By investing in these firms, NATO aims to enhance security and prosperity for its vast population, showcasing a collaborative effort to advance technological innovation in the defense sector.
