Samsung Electronics capitalizes on AI demand surge, reporting a tenfold increase in operating profit driven by memory chip sales. Despite challenges, the company remains optimistic about generative AI and financial performance.

Samsung Electronics, a leading South Korean technology company, is poised to capitalize on the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) in the latter half of 2024. This surge in AI demand is expected to significantly boost sales of memory chips and other tech devices. In the first quarter of the year, Samsung reported a remarkable tenfold increase in operating profit, driven primarily by a nearly doubled sales figure in memory chips compared to the previous year. The sharp increase in memory chip prices was fueled by the ongoing AI boom, setting a positive tone for the company's future prospects.

Looking ahead, Samsung remains optimistic about the business landscape in the second half of the year, particularly in the field of generative AI. Despite potential challenges stemming from macroeconomic fluctuations and geopolitical tensions, Samsung foresees a sustained uptick in AI-related demand. Financially, the company's operating profit for the January to March period surged to 6.6 trillion won (approximately $4.8 billion), marking a significant leap from the previous year's figure of 640 billion won. This achievement aligns with Samsung's earlier projections and represents the highest operating profit since the third quarter of 2022.

The recovery is particularly noteworthy given the tough times faced by the memory chip sector due to weakened post-pandemic consumer electronics demand. Samsung's chip division, historically a major contributor to the company's profits, rebounded strongly from a 4.58 trillion won loss in the previous year's March quarter to a profit of 1.91 trillion won. Additionally, first-quarter revenue saw a 13% increase to 71.9 trillion won, with memory chip revenue alone witnessing an impressive 96% surge to 17.49 trillion won.
