Valve is reportedly developing the Steam Controller 2 and a new VR controller, enhancing user experience and accessibility in gaming.

Valve, the renowned video game company, is reportedly developing a sequel to its original Steam Controller, which has garnered attention from gaming enthusiasts worldwide. According to insider information shared by YouTuber Brad Lynch, this new device, codenamed "Ibex," is currently in the works and is expected to enter mass production soon. While specific details about the controller's features remain limited, Lynch has indicated that it will resemble a standard gamepad, marking a significant shift in design.

The most notable change in the Steam Controller 2 appears to be its trackpads, which are being redesigned to adopt a more traditional gamepad shape. This adjustment aims to enhance user experience by making the controller feel more familiar to gamers. Additionally, the new controller is expected to feature symmetrical sticks, further aligning it with conventional gaming controllers.

In addition to the Steam Controller 2, Valve is also reportedly working on a new virtual reality (VR) controller, codenamed "Roy." This controller is said to be referenced in Valve's SteamVR code and is designed to complement the anticipated wireless "Deckard" headset. Unlike Valve's previous VR headset, the Index, which requires multiple base stations and a connection to a PC, the Deckard headset is rumored to be standalone, similar to the Meta Quest headset. This could make it a more accessible and potentially more affordable option for gamers.

The Roy controller is expected to have a wand-like shape and will reportedly function as a gamepad when not in use for VR. It is anticipated to include a D-pad, shoulder buttons, and ABXY buttons, allowing for traditional gameplay alongside its motion and VR capabilities. This versatility could appeal to a broader audience, as it combines the best of both worlds.

While the exact release dates for these products remain uncertain, Lynch has hinted that the Deckard headset is unlikely to be available during the holiday season of 2024. The development of the headset has been ongoing since at least 2021, and fans are eagerly awaiting more information.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the introduction of the Steam Controller 2 and the Roy VR controller could significantly impact how players interact with games. With Valve's commitment to innovation and user experience, these upcoming devices may not only enhance gameplay but also set new standards in the gaming industry. Gamers are hopeful that these advancements will bring fresh excitement and possibilities to their gaming experiences.
