Romina Khurshid Alam calls for urgent climate action and financial support for developing nations at COP29 in Baku.
Baku is currently the focal point of global climate discussions as the 29th annual United Nations climate conference, known as COP29, has commenced. This significant event brings together delegates from nearly 200 countries to address one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. With the world facing increasingly severe weather events, the urgency for a unified global response has never been more critical.
Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, has taken a leading role in representing Pakistan at this conference. She has made it clear that the time for action is now. In her statements to the media, she emphasized that “time to respond to the century’s worst challenge to the sustainability of planet earth, human lives and ecosystems is running out fast and climate inaction is no option.” This highlights the dire situation that vulnerable communities face as ecosystems continue to deteriorate.
The conference is particularly significant this year, as it follows a series of devastating weather disasters that have impacted developing countries. These nations are now demanding more financial support to cope with the worsening effects of climate change. The overarching goal of COP29 is to secure agreements on how to provide more funding to poorer countries, enabling them to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the changing climate.
During her discussions with journalists, Romina Khurshid Alam called on world leaders to fulfill their commitments regarding climate finance for developing nations. She stated, “Here in Baku, we, however, must reach an agreement on a new global climate finance goal to save the planet earth from devastating impacts of climate change.” This plea underscores the importance of financial support in addressing climate challenges.
Moreover, she urged for an “ambitious” new goal for climate funding, reminding leaders of wealthier nations that climate finance is not merely a charitable request but a necessity for developing countries striving to meet their climate adaptation and disaster resilience needs. “We must understand that COP29 is the unmissable moment to chart a new path forward for everyone,” she asserted, emphasizing the critical nature of this conference.
As the discussions unfold, it is essential for global leaders to recognize the interconnectedness of our planet's health and the well-being of its inhabitants. The decisions made at COP29 will not only impact current generations but also shape the future for countless others. The call for action is clear: it is time for all nations to come together, prioritize climate action, and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
