Court Upholds Five-Year Sentence For Jordanian Drug Dealer

The issue of drug trafficking remains a significant concern in many countries, including Jordan. Recently, a notable case has emerged from the Court of Cassation, which has upheld a five-year prison sentence for a drug dealer convicted of selling illegal narcotics.

In June 2023, an undercover operation led by the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) in Amman resulted in the arrest of a man accused of selling Crystal meth, a highly addictive substance. The court found that the defendant had obtained this illegal drug with the intent to sell it to an undercover agent. The operation was initiated after the AND received information about the defendant's activities. An agent posed as a buyer and arranged to purchase a small quantity of Crystal meth for JD150. Upon meeting, the AND agents swiftly apprehended the suspect.

The State Security Court (SSC) initially sentenced the defendant to five years in prison and imposed a fine of JD5,000. However, the defendant contested this ruling, claiming that he was not given the opportunity to appoint a lawyer during the interrogation process. This argument was presented by his lawyer during the appeal.

Despite the defense's claims, the Court of Cassation upheld the SSC's ruling, emphasizing that the proper legal procedures were followed. The higher court noted that the defendant had willingly confessed to possessing the illegal drugs, which played a crucial role in their decision. Furthermore, the court clarified that the charges against the defendant did not legally require the presence of a lawyer during the interrogation.
