CPI Requests Lt. Governor's Support for Textile Park in Puducherry

The textile industry has long been a cornerstone of Puducherry's economy, with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Iconic textile mills such as Anglo-French Textiles (AFT), Swadeshi Cotton Mills, and Bharathi Mills once thrived in the region, providing employment and contributing significantly to the local economy. However, over the years, this vibrant sector has faced numerous challenges, leading to the decline and eventual closure of many mills. In light of this, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has taken a proactive step by urging the intervention of Lt. Governor K. Kailashnathan to establish a textile park in Puducherry under the PM MITRA scheme.

On October 17, a delegation from the CPI, led by State Secretary A.M. Saleem, met with the Lt. Governor to present a memorandum highlighting the urgent need for a textile hub in the region. The delegation emphasized that reviving the textile industry aligns with the aspirations of the local population and capitalizes on Puducherry's historical legacy as a textile center. The memorandum pointed out that the textile sector was once the backbone of the local economy during the French governance, and it is time to restore that glory.

The CPI's proposal includes the establishment of a comprehensive textile value chain, encompassing everything from spinning to manufacturing, all in one location. This initiative aims not only to create job opportunities but also to attract investments, thereby boosting the local economy. Additionally, the memorandum envisions promoting fashion tourism, which would blend culture, creativity, and niche markets, further enhancing Puducherry's economic landscape.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed optimism regarding Lt. Governor Kailashnathan's recent visit to the now-defunct AFT premises, viewing it as a positive sign for potential revival. However, they also raised concerns that the government might be considering alternative plans rather than focusing on revitalizing the existing mills. The CPI highlighted a recent meeting between MP K. Subbarayan and the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Textiles, where support was assured if Puducherry submits a formal proposal.

Despite previous announcements by the Puducherry Industries Minister regarding plans for a textile park, no concrete actions have been taken thus far. The CPI is now calling on the Lt. Governor to persuade the central government to include Puducherry in the PM MITRA scheme and prioritize the development of the textile park.
