Dubai, a city known for its stunning skyline and luxurious lifestyle, is taking innovative steps to provide relief from the sweltering summer heat. With temperatures frequently soaring above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), the Dubai government has introduced night beaches, allowing residents and tourists to enjoy the coastal beauty without the harsh rays of the sun. As the sun sets, the temperature drops, creating a pleasant atmosphere for beachgoers. Mohammed, a 32-year-old resident from Pakistan, expressed his delight, stating, "The temperature drops down in the evening after the sun sets. So, yeah, it's amazing." Many families, like Mohammed's, are taking advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the beach with their children, free from the oppressive daytime heat.

Despite ongoing regional conflicts, including tensions involving Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, Dubai's night beaches remain a hub of activity, especially during weekends. The city has designated over 800 meters of beach space, equipped with shark nets and illuminated by powerful floodlights, creating a unique nighttime experience. Lifeguards are present around the clock, utilizing night-vision binoculars to ensure the safety of swimmers. Additionally, officials are testing an artificial intelligence camera system designed to detect distress among beachgoers, further enhancing safety measures.

On a recent Friday night, Umm Suqeim beach was bustling with visitors, even at nearly midnight, with temperatures still hovering above 30°C (86°F). Mary Bayarka, a fitness coach from Belarus, remarked, "It feels like (I'm) in a bath," as she enjoyed the warm Gulf seawater. For many expatriates, the night beach serves as a vital escape from their demanding work lives. Laya Manko, a Filipina saleswoman, described the beach as her "stress reliever," emphasizing its significance as a weekly retreat for migrant workers.

Dubai's authorities view the night beaches as a strategic move to attract tourists, particularly during the summer months when extreme heat typically keeps them indoors. Hamad Shaker, an official from the Dubai municipality, noted, "I believe we are one of the only cities in the world to have such infrastructure on public beaches at night." This initiative marks a significant shift from the past when Dubai would empty out in summer as expatriates sought cooler climates.

Today, Dubai has transformed into a year-round urban destination, boasting attractions such as the world’s tallest building and indoor amusement parks, welcoming over 17 million visitors last year. However, experts caution that climate change may present future challenges. Manuela Gutberlet, a tourism researcher, highlighted extreme weather events, including unprecedented rainfall that paralyzed the city, as potential deterrents for tourists. "Adaptation to new risks is essential," she emphasized.

For many visitors, like 77-year-old Laziz Ahmed from France, the night beaches provide an ideal solution to enjoy the city. "During the day, I don't go out much," he said, adding that in the evening, "I make up for it."
