The Gaza conflict requires listening to Palestinian voices for a lasting peace, rather than imposing external solutions.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has deep historical roots, tracing back to the early 20th century when Western powers made decisions that would shape the future of the Arab East. A century ago, the United States sought to advocate for the self-determination of peoples emerging from colonial rule. A commission was sent to gauge Arab public opinion, and the findings were clear: the majority of Arabs opposed the division of their lands, the imposition of European mandates, and the establishment of a Zionist state in Palestine. Instead, they envisioned a unified Arab state. However, these sentiments were largely ignored, leading to the partitioning of the region and the eventual establishment of Israel, which has resulted in the ongoing dispossession and suffering of the Palestinian people.

Over the past three decades, the situation for Palestinians has deteriorated significantly. Following the Oslo Accords, Israel has systematically undermined the possibility of a unified Palestinian state. The division of East Jerusalem from the West Bank, the expansion of settlements, and the creation of “Jewish only” roads have fragmented Palestinian territories into isolated enclaves. Gaza, in particular, has faced severe economic strangulation, further exacerbating the plight of its residents. The aspirations that many held after the Oslo Accords have been dashed, and the international community, particularly the United States, has largely overlooked the needs and desires of the Palestinian people.

Current proposals for the future of Gaza, which suggest a governance model led by a “reformed” Palestinian Authority and security provided by an Arab-Islamic force, have been met with skepticism. These plans do not consider the voices of the Palestinians themselves and are primarily designed to satisfy Israeli security concerns. Israelis have rejected these proposals, refusing to allow Palestinians to return to their homes in Gaza or to accept any external security forces. Moreover, there is a significant reluctance to discuss the establishment of a Palestinian state that would require concessions on land or security.

It is crucial to shift the focus from imposing solutions to genuinely listening to Palestinian perspectives. The call for a cease-fire and an end to the occupation should be prioritized. The burden of the current situation should not fall on the victims of this conflict but rather on the policies that have perpetuated it. There are signs that public opinion in the United States is beginning to shift towards a more pro-Palestinian stance, with increasing support for Palestinian rights and opposition to Israeli policies that violate those rights.

However, a significant challenge remains: the lack of a clear Palestinian vision for the future and effective leadership to articulate it. A recent poll commissioned by Palestinian businessmen highlights the common threads of identity and desire for freedom among Palestinians, despite the different circumstances they face in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The poll indicates a strong desire for a new generation of leadership that can unify the Palestinian ranks and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

The path forward for Palestinians lies in recognizing their right to self-determination and ensuring that their voices are heard in any discussions about their future. Instead of imposing external solutions, it is essential to engage with Palestinians to understand their aspirations and needs. Only through genuine dialogue and respect for their rights can a lasting peace be achieved in the region. The world must shift its focus from political maneuvering to the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people, paving the way for a future where they can live in freedom and dignity.
