In a world increasingly interconnected by technology and culture, the teachings of ancient philosophers continue to resonate with the youth of today. The 2024 China International Confucius Cultural Festival, held in Qufu, Shandong, recently showcased the perspectives of Generation Z on the enduring relevance of Confucius. This event not only celebrated the wisdom of Confucius but also highlighted how his teachings inspire young people across the globe.

The festival commenced with a grand opening ceremony on September 27, where the results of the "Confucius in My Eyes" Global Gen Z Photo, Short-video, and Writing Contest were presented. Young representatives from five continents shared their insights on Confucian philosophy, emphasizing its humanistic spirit and moral values that continue to guide their lives. These young voices illustrated how Confucius' teachings transcend cultural boundaries, fostering a sense of unity among the youth.

One of the standout participants was Hewaralalage Chethiya Raj Sampath from Sri Lanka, who described his journey of becoming a "Confucius fan" while studying Chinese. His experience in Qufu, where he attended university, allowed him to witness the Confucian virtues of refinement, hospitality, humility, and courtesy in action. He expressed a desire for more young people to visit Confucius' hometown and experience the warmth of Shandong's culture.

Maria, a representative from the United States, shared her experience in a teaching support program, where she observed the eagerness of children to learn. She reflected on Confucius' educational philosophy of "education without discrimination," which she found to be profoundly impactful even after two millennia. This highlights how the core values of education and knowledge remain relevant in today's society.

From Australia, Anna made a striking impression by wearing traditional Chinese academic attire at her graduation. She connected this experience to the ancient Chinese saying, "The greatness of etiquette is called Xia, the beauty of clothing and adornment is called Hua," showcasing how clothing and etiquette reflect Confucian ideals. Anna's commitment to sharing the beauty of Chinese culture with the world is a testament to the global appreciation of Confucian values.

Dubrey ZoébAbigaïl Cassyopée from France shared her journey of friendship with a Chinese peer, which led her to study in China. Winning a gold prize in a recitation competition, she expressed her hope to spread Confucian classics internationally, allowing more people to experience the richness of Chinese culture. This illustrates the power of personal connections in fostering cultural exchange.

Salma from Morocco highlighted her uncle's influence in igniting her passion for Confucian thought. She plans to focus her doctoral research on Confucius, aiming to promote cultural exchange through literature. Salma's assertion that "now Confucius is no longer just China's Confucius, but the world's Confucius" encapsulates the universal appeal of his teachings.

During the festival, these young representatives participated in the annual Memorial Ceremony for Confucius and visited significant cultural sites, including the Confucius Temple and the Kong Family Mansion. Engaging in traditional practices such as the "Six Arts" and woodblock printing, they experienced firsthand the lasting influence of Confucian ideology and the vibrant heritage of Chinese civilization.

The 2024 China International Confucius Cultural Festival served as a powerful reminder of the relevance of Confucian teachings in today's world. As young people from diverse backgrounds come together to share their experiences and insights, it becomes clear that the wisdom of Confucius continues to inspire and guide the next generation. This cultural exchange not only enriches their lives but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the values that unite us all.
