India Parliament Suspended Over Adani Group Allegations

NEW DELHI: The Indian parliament faced a temporary suspension on Thursday, marking the third consecutive day of disruption by opposition lawmakers. This unrest stems from serious allegations against the Adani Group, a major player in India's business landscape. The opposition is demanding a thorough discussion regarding these allegations, which have raised eyebrows both domestically and internationally.

Recently, U.S. authorities accused Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Vneet S. Jaain, the managing director of Adani Green, of being involved in a scheme that allegedly involved paying bribes amounting to $265 million. This money was purportedly used to secure contracts for solar power supply in India. Furthermore, these individuals are accused of misleading U.S. investors during fundraising efforts. Such serious claims have ignited a firestorm of protests within the Indian parliament.

Manickam Tagore, a lawmaker from the opposition Congress party, expressed the sentiments of many when he stated, “We want a discussion on this in parliament. It is going to be the third day that we are demanding a reply from the prime minister” regarding the Adani issue. The Congress party has been at the forefront of these protests, seeking accountability and transparency in the face of these allegations.

Opposition parties have leveled accusations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that they are favoring the Adani Group and obstructing investigations into the matter. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader and vocal critic of Adani, has gone so far as to call for the arrest of Gautam Adani, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

While the government has refrained from commenting on the indictment, BJP spokesperson Gopal Krishna Agarwal stated, “Let him defend himself,” indicating that the law will take its course. The BJP has also emphasized that it does not oppose industrialists, viewing them as partners in the nation’s development.
