Karnataka BJP protests against Waqf property misuse, demanding withdrawal of 1974 notification and investigation into alleged abuses.

The ongoing Waqf property controversy in Karnataka has escalated, prompting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to organize a statewide protest today. This protest is primarily aimed at demanding the withdrawal of the 1974 Waqf property gazette notification, which the BJP claims has been misused by the government for political gain. The party is also calling for a thorough investigation by central agencies into alleged abuses of authority related to land transfers.

At a press conference held on Saturday in Bengaluru, former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP MLA C.N. Ashwath Narayan announced the details of the protest. He emphasized that the BJP is seeking an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into what they describe as the creation of false records within the Karnataka Waqf Board. According to the BJP, these records, which have been generated over the past 50 years, are being utilized for minority appeasement and vote-bank politics.

"Farmers, monasteries, and Hindu temples are reportedly concerned about the misuse of the Waqf Act, originally enacted by Congress for minority appeasement," Ashwath Narayan stated. He expressed that this situation has instilled fear among farmers regarding the potential loss of their lands. The BJP is insisting that simply withdrawing notices is not enough; they demand that farmers' names be reinstated in property records and that the 1974 gazette notification be repealed entirely.

In response to the growing unrest surrounding the Waqf issue, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has issued a strict directive to officials. He has ordered the immediate retraction of all notices sent to farmers concerning Waqf land issues, stressing that no disturbances should be caused to the farmers. This directive came after a high-level meeting that included senior officials from the Revenue Department, Minority Welfare Department, and the Waqf Board. CM Siddaramaiah expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the actions taken by certain officials, accusing the Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP of exploiting the Waqf issue for political advantage, which could potentially disrupt peace in Karnataka.

The Waqf property issue is not just a political matter; it has significant implications for the lives of many farmers and communities in Karnataka. As the BJP and the government continue to clash over this sensitive topic, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the welfare of the people. The outcome of today’s protest and the subsequent actions taken by the government will be closely watched, as they could set a precedent for how similar issues are handled in the future. The situation remains fluid, and it is essential for citizens to stay informed and engaged as developments unfold.
