Manipur government extends mobile internet suspension for two days to maintain law and order amid ongoing unrest and fears of social media misuse.

The situation in Manipur has taken a serious turn as the state government has decided to extend the suspension of mobile internet and data services for an additional two days. This decision affects nine districts, including the troubled Jiribam district. The move comes as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the region.

Officials have reported that, apart from one individual who went missing on November 25 from Kangpokpi district, there have been no significant incidents in the affected areas since November 18. However, the government remains vigilant, fearing that anti-social elements might exploit social media to spread hate speech and incite violence among the public.

Commissioner of Home, N. Ashok Kumar, stated, "In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state, on the apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation." This highlights the government's concern over the potential misuse of mobile internet during these tense times.

The suspension of mobile internet and data services will remain in effect until 5:15 p.m. on December 3. This decision follows a series of violent incidents that began on November 16, when mobs attacked the residences of ministers, MLAs, and political leaders in valley districts, including Imphal East and Imphal West. The unrest was triggered by the discovery of the bodies of three missing children and three women in Jiribam district.

Initially, the suspension was ordered for two days, but it has been extended periodically over the past 17 days due to ongoing tensions. Despite the internet suspension, regular classes in educational institutions across six districts resumed on November 29, and curfew restrictions have been eased in the same areas. However, gatherings and rallies still require prior approval from the authorities, indicating that the situation remains delicate.

The extension of mobile internet suspension in Manipur underscores the government's commitment to ensuring public safety amidst ongoing unrest. While the return to normalcy in educational institutions is a positive sign, the need for caution remains paramount. It is crucial for residents to stay informed and adhere to regulations set forth by local authorities to help restore peace in the region.
