Nanyang Polytechnic Launches NYP X for Community Sustainability

In recent years, sustainability has become a crucial topic worldwide, with communities and organizations striving to make impactful changes. Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) in Singapore has taken a significant step forward by launching a new initiative called NYP X. This collective aims to foster positive change not only within the campus but also in the surrounding neighborhoods and communities. The first event of this initiative, an Eco Fest, took place on November 3, 2024, at Teck Ghee Community Club, marking the beginning of a series of efforts to promote sustainable living. Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong attended the event, highlighting the importance of community involvement in sustainability efforts. In the coming months, young leaders and alumni from NYP will visit households to encourage residents to adopt sustainable habits. Activities such as freecycle markets, e-waste collection drives, and Repair Kopitiam will be organized, allowing residents to fix broken appliances instead of throwing them away. Additionally, there will be efforts to improve the living conditions of the elderly and low-income families.

NYP X is a vital part of NYP's Sustainability Masterplan, which reflects the institution's commitment to creating a positive impact beyond its campus. Mr. Russell Chan, the Principal and CEO of NYP, emphasized the role of the institution as a catalyst for change, stating, "We see ourselves as catalysts and changemakers for a better tomorrow. That means extending our hand in partnership beyond the campus." This initiative is not just about NYP; it is about collaborating with businesses, neighborhoods, and start-ups to reduce collective footprints and improve sustainability practices.

Another significant aspect of the Sustainability Masterplan is the establishment of the NYP Living Lab, which has been allocated $10 million to fund innovative sustainability solutions. This initiative encourages collaboration among students, staff, and industry partners to develop and test new ideas on campus. For instance, previous projects have successfully utilized Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to monitor various aspects of campus operations, leading to improved efficiency and resource management.

Looking ahead, NYP is exploring partnerships with alternative protein companies to conduct research on cultivated meat and seafood. This collaboration aims to scale up cell production for market trials, showcasing the potential of the Living Lab model in real-world applications. Mr. Chan noted, "Sustainability at NYP is an enterprise-wide effort. It's not just about recycling, waste reduction, and energy or water conservation. It is integrating sustainability in everything we do." This holistic approach ensures that sustainability becomes a core value in all aspects of the institution's operations.
