KATHMANDU: The recent floods in Nepal have left a devastating mark on the lives of many families, particularly in the capital city of Kathmandu. The heavy rains that began on September 28, 2023, resulted in the worst flooding the region has experienced in five decades. With over 200 lives lost and countless homes destroyed, the impact of this natural disaster is profound and heartbreaking.

Bishworaj Khadka, a cook residing in Lalitpur, experienced the terror of the rising Nakhu River firsthand. As he sat with his wife and daughter-in-law, the sound of the river grew louder, signaling the impending danger. After hours of relentless rain, the family felt the tremors of the ground beneath them. In a frantic rush, they fled their home, leaving behind everything except for a small amount of cash. Just minutes later, their house collapsed, swallowed by the raging waters.

The relentless rain continued for another day, causing landslides and flooding across the Kathmandu Valley. In just two days, the area received nearly 10 inches of rain, which is about 20 percent of the average monthly rainfall. The Bagmati River overflowed, inundating low-lying neighborhoods and damaging temporary shelters. Many families, particularly those living in urban areas, found their homes buried under a foot of mud and debris from fallen trees and damaged buildings.

By Monday, the sun finally broke through the clouds, offering a glimmer of hope. Bishworaj and his wife, Sharmila, returned to their home to assess the damage. The sight was devastating; their belongings were scattered and ruined. Sharmila searched desperately for any cooking utensils that might have survived the disaster, a small but significant reminder of their life before the floods.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the vulnerability of communities living in flood-prone areas.
