A new study reveals that nut consumption may significantly lower cardiovascular risk by improving blood lipid levels.

A new systematic review and meta-analysis, funded by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), has added to this growing body of evidence. The research revealed that consuming nuts may lead to favorable changes in blood lipids, which are crucial for heart health. The median daily intake assessed was 45.5 grams of nuts, compared to a control group that did not consume nuts. The findings indicated that nut consumption resulted in moderate reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. Additionally, there were small reductions in triglycerides and apolipoprotein B, although no significant changes were observed in HDL cholesterol, known as "good" cholesterol.
These results are particularly important as they support existing dietary recommendations for nut consumption, especially for individuals at risk of cardiovascular diseases. The researchers emphasized that nuts can be a valuable part of a nutrient-dense diet, which is essential for maintaining heart health. Prof. Jordi Salas-Salvadó, the principal investigator of the study, noted that despite some recent skepticism regarding the cholesterol benefits of nuts, the overwhelming evidence supports their inclusion in dietary guidelines.
