North Korea's Kim Jong Un Pushes for Mass Production of Exploding Drones

North Korea has recently conducted tests on exploding drones, which are designed to crash into their targets. This military demonstration comes at a time when tensions are high in the region, particularly with the United States, South Korea, and Japan conducting joint military exercises nearby. These exercises involve advanced fighter jets and a US aircraft carrier, showcasing their defense strategies against North Korea.

According to North Korea's state media, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), leader Kim Jong Un has called for the rapid mass production of these drones. During the tests, Kim was seen discussing the drones with officials, and the images released showed at least two different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. Some of these drones have X-shaped tails and wings that resemble those revealed in August during another demonstration.

The KCNA reported that the drones successfully flew various routes and accurately hit their targets. Among the targets were a BMW sedan and older models of tanks, which were destroyed during the tests. Kim expressed his satisfaction with the development of these weapons and emphasized the importance of establishing a production system quickly to ensure full-scale mass production. He noted that drones are becoming increasingly vital in modern warfare.

Interestingly, Kim mentioned that these drones are relatively easy to produce at a low cost, making them suitable for a variety of military operations. However, the report did not specify if Kim was directly addressing South Korea, which is believed to be a primary target for these drones.

In a related context, North Korea accused South Korea last month of sending its own drones to drop anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. This accusation has led to threats from North Korea to respond with force if such actions continue. South Korea's military has not confirmed whether these claims are accurate.

The situation in the region has become increasingly tense as Kim showcases his advancing nuclear and missile capabilities. These include various nuclear-capable weapons aimed at South Korea and intercontinental ballistic missiles that could potentially reach the US mainland. Furthermore, there are concerns that Kim is sending military equipment and troops to Russia to support President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, which could lead to North Korea acquiring advanced Russian technology to enhance its military arsenal.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken have already met to discuss their concerns regarding the deepening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow, particularly regarding North Korean troop deployments to support Russia's military efforts in Ukraine.
