Ordos Leads Global Fight Against Desertification

Desertification is a pressing global issue that affects millions of people and ecosystems around the world. In recent years, the city of Ordos, located in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region of China, has emerged as a beacon of hope in the fight against this environmental challenge. With its innovative approaches and commitment to sustainable development, Ordos has attracted international attention, inspiring visitors from various countries to witness its remarkable progress.

Recently, a media tour was organized in Ordos, themed "Green Empowerment and Creating a Future Together: Practices of Chinese Modernization in Ordos." This event took place on September 27-28 and welcomed diplomats, scholars, and journalists from both China and abroad. The tour provided a unique opportunity for participants to experience the city's charm and its advancements in socioeconomic and green development.

One of the highlights of the tour was the Dalad Photovoltaic Power Base, situated in the Kubuqi Desert. This impressive facility is not just a power generation site; it is a model of how renewable energy can be harnessed to combat desertification. With a construction scale of 1 million kilowatts, the base generates up to 2 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity each year, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Salvador Moncada, the ambassador of Honduras to China, expressed his amazement, stating, "It is remarkable to see the scale and energy output of the photovoltaic base, as well as the significant strides made in combating desertification and promoting sustainable agriculture in the region."

In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, Ordos is also known as the "cashmere capital" of China. The Erdos Modern Cashmere Industrial Park, led by the Erdos Group, showcases the city's industrial prowess. Founded in 1980, the Erdos Group has transformed from a local enterprise into a global leader in cashmere production, boasting over 70 billion yuan in total assets. Maria dos Ramos, the minister counselor and deputy head of mission of the Embassy of Venezuela, praised the factory, saying, "The cashmere factory is unparalleled in the world. All the products are of top quality and the cashmere fabric is very comfortable to the touch."

The media tour also included a visit to the Ulan Mulun Lake in the Kangbashi district, where participants enjoyed a stunning musical fountain display. Furthermore, an award ceremony for the International Cartoon and Illustration Exhibition on a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind 2024 was held in Ordos on September 29. This exhibition, which focused on global environmental issues, received around 3,700 submissions from nearly 60 countries, highlighting the importance of art in raising awareness about climate change and biodiversity protection.
