Quadrilateral Group Urges Taliban to Address Security Threats

The recent meeting of the Quadrilateral Group, which includes Pakistan, China, Iran, and Russia, has brought to light the pressing security concerns stemming from Afghanistan. This group was established following the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, with the primary aim of stabilizing the region and addressing various challenges, including security, migration, and economic issues. The situation in Afghanistan has become increasingly precarious, and the four nations are keen to work together to promote peace and stability.

During the latest gathering, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, participants expressed their worries about the rising threat of militancy. An official statement highlighted that the group is particularly concerned about terrorism emanating from Afghanistan. The statement urged the Afghan interim government to take decisive action against terrorist groups and to ensure that Afghan territory is not used to threaten neighboring countries or the broader region.

Pakistan, in particular, has been vocal about its concerns regarding the surge in militant violence, which it attributes to armed factions operating from Afghanistan. Last year, Pakistani officials accused the Afghan administration of "facilitating" groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This led to a significant deportation drive against Afghan immigrants, resulting in the expulsion of over 700,000 individuals. Afghan authorities, however, have denied any involvement in Pakistan's security issues and have opposed the expulsion of their citizens.

The TTP has also posed a threat to foreign nationals, specifically targeting Chinese workers involved in energy and infrastructure projects in Pakistan. This situation is alarming, especially in light of a recent major militant attack near Moscow, where operatives linked to Daesh's Khorasan chapter, based in Afghanistan, killed 145 people and injured over 550. Such incidents underline the urgent need for a coordinated response to the security challenges that have arisen since the Taliban's return to power.
