Saudi Arabia's KSrelief has doubled its aid efforts in Sudan, providing over $3 billion in support amid a severe humanitarian crisis.
In recent times, Sudan has faced a severe humanitarian crisis, prompting international attention and support. The situation has escalated dramatically, with millions of people forced to flee their homes due to violence and instability. In response to this dire need, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has stepped up its humanitarian efforts significantly, as highlighted by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the head of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief).
During a meeting at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Dr. Al-Rabeeah announced that KSrelief has doubled its aid efforts in Sudan over the past year. He emphasized that the Sudanese people “are working to overcome enormous challenges, and deserve much from us.” This statement underscores the commitment of Saudi Arabia to support those in need during these trying times.
The meeting, titled “The Cost of Inaction: Urgent and Collective Support to Scale Up the Humanitarian Response in Sudan and the Region,” served as a platform for discussing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Dr. Al-Rabeeah pointed out that Saudi Arabia recognizes its responsibility towards Sudan and has made intensive efforts since the onset of the crisis to restore hope among its people.
One of the key initiatives mentioned was the “Jeddah Declaration,” which aims to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of urgent relief aid. Additionally, the efforts of the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan group have recently provided assistance to thousands of needy individuals in Darfur.
However, the situation remains critical. Dr. Al-Rabeeah noted that the recent escalation of violence has worsened conditions, forcing millions to abandon their homes and belongings. In response, the Kingdom has provided over $3 billion in support to Sudan, which includes $132 million in humanitarian aid distributed across various regions and sectors.
Before the crisis intensified in April 2023, KSrelief was focused on sustainable interventions. Unfortunately, the deteriorating humanitarian conditions have necessitated a shift towards immediate assistance. Since April 2023, KSrelief has implemented more than 70 humanitarian projects at a cost exceeding $73 million, collaborating with UN organizations and other humanitarian groups.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah also highlighted the series of humanitarian air and sea missions organized by KSrelief to tackle urgent challenges. These missions are funded through government and public support as part of the national aid campaign for the people of Sudan.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Dr. Al-Rabeeah stressed the need for collective action to provide unrestricted humanitarian aid and ensure a coordinated response with safe access to conflict-affected areas. He concluded his speech with a powerful message: “As a humanitarian community, we must deal with the humanitarian crisis in Sudan away from political considerations. It is a humanitarian tragedy that requires transcending divisions, and together, we can make a real change that ensures all Sudanese people enjoy equal opportunities to rebuild their lives.”
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan calls for urgent and sustained international support. The commitment shown by KSrelief and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is commendable, but it is clear that more needs to be done. As global citizens, it is our responsibility to advocate for those in need and ensure that humanitarian efforts are prioritized over political agendas. Only through collective action can we hope to bring about meaningful change and stability for the people of Sudan.
